TORSION OF TESTIS / TESTICULAR TORSION

TORSION OF TESTIS:

Testicular Torsion (Torsion of Testis) is an emergency condition, which occurs when the Spermatic cord which provides blood flow to the testicles rotates and becomes twisted, which leads to sudden pain and swelling.

Torsion of Testis requires immediate surgery within few hours to prevent permanent damage of the testicle.

Causes:
It’s not clear why torsion occurs, but often related after several hours of vigorous activities, after minor injury while sleeping, cold temperature and rapid growth of testicles during puberty are the known causes of Testicular Torsion.

Diagnosis:
It is diagnosed after physical examination of the scrotum, abdomen, and groin by checking the reflex of the testis, a urine test, and scrotal ultrasound to check the blood flow to testicles.

Surgical Management:
Surgery is performed under general anesthesia were the urologist will make a small incision into the scrotum and untwist the spermatic cord, then stitches one or both the testicles to the inside of the scrotum.
